Introduction
Windows 7 should be able to download and install the appropriate USB driver from the Microsoft driver server. In the rare occasion where this process does not complete, the following instructions can be used to determine the cause and resolution of the problem to complete the installation process.
A driver installation problem has occurred when the following dialog appears after the Aptina development kit baseboard (also known as “Demo2X” or "Demo3") has been connected to a USB port:
In most cases, the driver will fail to install when:
- There is an incorrect firmware version installed on the development kit baseboard
- There is no Internet connection or restrictions with your system’s Firewall configuration.
Note: Any driver update procedure must be completed for each USB port where a Demo2X/Demo3 is connected.
Determine the Cause of the Installation Problem
Start by selecting the Windows icon in the bottom left corner:
Next, select “Computer”:
When the Configuration dialog appears, select “System Properties”:
When the System dialog appears, select “Device Manager”:
Note the bit-size of your Operating System for possible later use.
When the Device Manager dialog appears, double-click on “Demo2X” to open its properties page:
Note: If “Demo2X” is not displayed as the device or there is not device entry under “Other devices”, this indicates an unrecoverable HW failure and the device must be returned to Aptina for replacement.
When the Demo2X Properties dialog appears, click on the “Details” tab and then select “Hardware Ids” from the “Property” pull-down:
At this point, you will be able to determine the cause of the installation problem:
1. If VID (Vendor ID) shows “0634”, then this indicates that there is an incorrect firmware (FW) version installed on the Demo2X. To correct this problem, the Demo2X FW must be updated on an XP-based PC with DevSuite installed since that’s the only system with a USB driver matched to that FW.
Follow the instructions in the “DevSuite Quick-Start Guide.pdf” document in the “doc” folder for instructions on how to install DevSuite and the XP-based USB driver.
To update the Demo2X FW, please refer to the document “Demo Firmware User Guide.pdf”, found in the same folder as this User Guide.
If the problem was incorrect FW, you are now done.
2. If VID (Vendor ID) shows “20FB”, then the FW is correct; follow the remaining instructions in this document to manually install the USB driver.
Manual Installation of the USB Driver
Note: these instructions assume that you’ve followed the previous set of steps to display the “Demo2X Properties” dialog.
Start by selecting the “Drivers” tab, and then select the “Update Driver” button:
When the “Update Driver Software – Demo2X” dialog appears, select “Browse my computer …”:
When the next “Update Driver Software – Demo2X” dialog appears, select “Let me pick from …”:
When the next “Update Driver Software – Demo2X” dialog appears, scroll down and select “Universal Serial Bus controllers”:
Note: if this dialog doesn’t appear and instead a dialog titled “Update Driver Software – Aptina Imaging Demo2X Board” appears, this indicates that another Aptina USB driver has been previously installed.
In this case, follow just continue on to the next step and follow those instructions with the alternative dialog, selecting “Have Disk” to continue.
When the next “Update Driver Software – Demo2X” dialog appears, select “Have Disk”:
When the “Locate File” dialog appears, using the pull-down for “Look in:” to navigate to the driver folder. You can find the bit-size of your Operating System from the “System” dialog from page 3.
The default locations, per Operating System size, are:
- For 32-bit operating systems: “\Aptina Imaging\drivers\Windows7_32\Usb32w7.inf”
- For 64-bit operating systems: “\Aptina Imaging\drivers\Windows7_64\Usb64w7.inf”
Select the file “Usb*w7.inf” and then select “Open” to continue.
When the “Install from Disk” dialog appears, select “OK”:
When the next “Update Driver Software – Demo2X” dialog appears, select “Next”:
When the “Update Driver Software – Aptina Imaging Demo2X Board” dialog appears, select “Close” to finish the installation process:
The USB driver installation process is now complete.
